Choosing the Right Grow Lights


With all that said, what should you look for when buying grow lights for your houseplants? First, while there are several different types of grow lights on the market today, LEDs are generally the best choice for home and small applications. Not only are LED lights more cost-effective than other kinds of grow lights, but they are also the most energy-efficient.

Plus, they’re everywhere. Then, make sure you choose full-spectrum lights: lights that cover the entire PAR spectrum (400 to 700 nanometers) and include lots of red and blue light.

Another thing to look out for is the PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) value, although it is not a standard unit of measurement for most grow light manufacturers, it expresses the amount of light emitted by the grow light. More specifically, PPFD measures the number of photons per unit time in the PAR range on a unit surface.

Ideal values for indoor plant growth will fall within the 500 to 700 µmol/m2 range. However, don’t panic if you don’t see this value reported. While this is not the most efficient way to measure the output of grow lights, manufacturers usually report light output in watts or lumens. In these cases, aim for grow lights that cover about 500 lumens per square foot, or about 20–25 watts per square foot.

Conclusion

You can certainly grow plants indoors using regular LED grow lights, but you probably don’t want to. These lights are less efficient than specialized grow lights.
